JULY 13th

Features  Backbending & Designing Your Personal Practice
2-3:15 pm
Asana Class focusing on the development of back extensions. We will cover the basic actions of backbending for safety and efficiency. The class will build from basic to more complex backbends within the context of a full asana sequence.
3:15-4:10 pm
Modifications for "Stiff Bodies." This segment will teach modifications using props to make the backbends approachable for all body types.
4:20-5 pm
Snack and Discussion Group. After a 10-minute break we will sit down for a discussion about common problems and obstacles in our personal yoga practices. Bring stories to share regarding your own roadblocks and successes, or bring your questions about how to keep moving forward in your practice.
5-6 pm
Pranayama and Pratyahara. We will look at how backbneds and pranayama practice support one another.

SEPTEMBER 14th
Features Triceps First: Engaging the arms before the upper back & Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi
2-4:10 pm
Asana Class teaching proper arm/triceps actions. Students often find it difficult to fire the triceps muscles on the upper arms without first gripping in their shoulders, upper back and chest. This series will progress from non-weight bearing to weight-bearing asanas to reveal the mystery of the triceps. Having the "triceps key" unlocks the thoracic (chest) cavity and opens wide the door to all of the inversions and backbending postures.
4:20-5 pm

Discussion of Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi. After a 10 minute break Sara will lead a group discussion about the more subtle limbs of yoga,  samyama. You may enjoy tea and a light snack during the discussion. Suggested Reading: From B.K.S. Iyengar's Light on The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali the introduction to the Vibhuti Pada and sutras III.1 through III.8. And from his The Tree of Yoga, read the chapters entitled The Sap, The Flower and The Fruit  from section 2.

5-6 pm
Pranayama and Pratyahara. In this segment we will explore prop set ups and proper alignment for seated pranayama practice, then you will learn variations of setubandha sarvangasana for a deep restorative practice

OCTOBER 12th
Features  Wrists and Hands & Light On Yoga Discussion
2-3:15 pm
Asana Class taught emphasizing wrists and hands. This class will begin to address the relationship between your hands and forearms to your shoulders and chest structures. Asanas that rely on intelligent and efficient use of the hands and arm, particularly in weight-bearing postures, will be emphasized.
3:15-4:10 pm
Series for hand, wrist and forearm stiffness/weakness. This segment will teach you remedial work to prepare the wrists and hands for asanas dependent on the arms.
4:20-5 pm
Snack and Discussion Group. After a brief break we will sit down for a discussion about the B.K.S. Iyengar's classic text, Light On Yoga. Please read the introduction and scan the asanas in preparation for our discussion.  You may enjoy tea and a light snack during the discussion.
5-6 pm
Pranayama and Pratyahara. We will review and practice the viloma pranayamas and introduce bhramari.

Asanas to support Pranayama. This segment will teach a series of asanas to open the thoracic cavity (ribcage) to support the pranayama practice and to quiet the nervous system.
4:20-5 pm
Discussion Group. After a 10-minute break we will sit down for an interactive discussion about pratyahara (sense withdrawal) and learn some techniques to approach the senses with understanding. We will address the jnanendriyas (organs of perception) and the karmendriyas (organs of action) and how we interact with the world via these systems.
