Class Descriptions
If uncertain which class is right for you, simply come to a class. After seeing you in the class and discussing your goals, the teacher can best advise you regarding class placement.

LEVELS 1 THROUGH 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These “level classes” progress according to a syllabus which all our teachers follow. It is suggested that you attend the full quarter in sequence to benefit fully. (Classes within the same week may be interchanged.) All students should begin with Level 1 unless they have previous Iyengar yoga experience. Each level introduces a new group of postures and is not necessarily more difficult, but rather, is more detailed or more subtle and builds upon the previous level’s work.

Level 1
Introduction for students new to yoga or new to the Iyengar method. Begins standing postures, standing forward bends, twists and shoulder balance. Students may repeat this course twice (up to 9 months) then proceed to level 2. Level 1 classes are challenging and should not be considered “easier” than level 2.

Level 1-2
This class is a mixed-level class for continuing Level 1 students. NO BEGINNERS. (It is not necessary to attend level 1-2 classes before moving to level 2.)

Level 2
Prerequisite 6-9 months level 1 or the equivalent Iyengar method experience. This class introduces more complex standing postures, headstand, backbends and inversions.

Level 3
Prerequisite 9 months level 2 or equivalent study in the Iyengar method. Must be practicing sirsasana, sarvangasana and urdhva dhanurasana, and know the sanskrit names of the postures from the Level 1 and 2 syllabi.

SPECIALTY CLASSES ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
All specialty classes below are appropriate for beginners and may be used primarily, supplementally or as preparation for the more challenging “level” classes.

Supported Asana
This class uses yoga props to support the body for better alignment, for better opening of the joints and for teaching the receptive aspect of the postures while developing strength/stability. This class bridges the gap between relaxation and fully-active/classic asana work.

Legs & Low Back
This class teaches proper alignment starting with the feet and ankles. Develop proper and balanced use of the inner and outer leg muscles to improve balance and stability. Great for students with back problems.

Yoga Therapy
This class is for beginners or continuing students recovering from injury or illness. Each student practices an individualized sequence designed according to the student’s specific needs. Contact Sara at (412) 401-2162 to discuss participation before coming to class.

Restorative
This course introduces relaxation and an understanding of the relaxation response through yogic breathing, postures and meditation. Helpful for stress reduction and for recovery from prevention of illness.

Pranayama & Sound
Rhythmic breathing techniques, done seated and lying down, steady your nervous system and develop respiratory and cardiovascular health. Class will also explore sound through bhramari breathing and om chanting.

Hip Work
This class will present hip alignment and hip opening and the upper leg work needed to support that opening. Includes the one-legged standing postures; Virabhadrasana 3, Ardha Chandrasana and ParivrittaArdha Chandrasana.

Hips & Lotus Prep
This class will focus on deep opening of the hip joints and on the preperatory work and basic actions for padmasana (lotus posture.)

Yoga For Stiff Bodies
This class is helpful for tighter or muscular body types that need extra time in the postures to release tension and open the body.

PRACTICE SESSIONS --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
