All classes, except levels I/II, II, and III, are appropriate
for beginners. If uncertain about class placement, simply come to a class. After seeing you in the class and discussing your goals, the teacher can best advise you regarding class placement. |
Our Level 1 through 3 classes form the basis of our schedule and each level class progresses according to a syllabus. It is suggested that you attend the full quarter in sequence to benefit fully. Students should generally begin with a level 1 or Supported Asana class, however all of our classes except levels 1/2, 2 and 3 are beginner friendly. |
level I: Introductory class for students new to yoga or new to the Iyengar method. Introduces standing postures, standing forward bends, twists, inversions and backbends.
level I/II: This class is a transition from the Level I syllabus to the Level II syllabus. For continuing Level 1 students and Level 2 students. No beginners.
level II: Expands upon the basics presented in level 1. Prerequisite 6-9 months level 1 or the equivalent Iyengar method experience.
level III: Prerequisite 9 months level 2 or equivalent study in the Iyengar method. Must be proficient in sirsasana, sarvangasana and urdhva dhanurasana.
|
supported asana: an asana class using props for support. Moderate work is required in the postures. The goal is better alignment and opening of the joints and learning how to maintain the receptive (sukha) aspect of the asanas while activating and developing strength and stability (sthira.) The emphasis here is in learning to bridge the gap between relaxation/ savasana and fully-active/classic asana work. Supported Asana is especially appropriate for the tighter, more muscular, body types that need more time in supported asanas to open up the body.
|
|
pranayama: Rhythmic breathing techniques, done seated and supine, relieve stress, develop mental clarity, and support physical endurance as well as emotional stability. Hip and chest opening asanas create freedom in these regions to provide a foundation for a safe and accomplished pranyama practice.
|
|
inversions workshop: This 12-week introduction to inversions will focus on supported and classic head and shoulder balancing postures. Learn proper form in the final postures and techniques to prepare and open the body to practice safely and effectively. This class is especially appropriate for those experiencing difficulties with or fear of inversions.
|
|
backbend workshop: This class teaches proper form in supported and classic backbends for both types of people, those who love, and those who loathe, backbends. Proper form teaches the flexible student to not injure the overly supple lumbar spine and teaches the stiff student to release resistance rather than to force or to strain. Backbends, taught properly, help relieve depression and help resolve back, neck and shoulder problems. They can also be a great morning substitute for caffeine!
|
|
forward bending: Tight calves and hamstrings
can contribute to lower back, knee, and ankle
discomfort or injury, as well as making forward bends
and daily movements difficult. This workshop is
appropriate for beginners. It will teach you
techniques to release the backs of your legs and to
improve your range of motion.
|
short course:
weeks 1-4: Neck & Shoulders
weeks 5-8: Hips & Lower Back
weeks 9-12: Knees, Ankles, & Feet
You can sign up either for all 12 weeks or for a
4 week “short course.” Classes focus on preparatory
work for classic asanas and on restoring full range
of motion to the joints. This preliminary work is
appropriate for any level student – beginner through
advanced. It will deepen your understanding of your
body and of your asana practice.
